Walter Benjamin Cobb was reported "missing" August 7 1942. A year later August 7 1943, A letter to Walter's mother was written after her asking the about the body of her son. I was Blessed to have met Walter's brother and received this letter for my boys. I am putting in some lines from a few paragraphs of this letter that I have to Mrs. Cobb from the U.S.S. Mugford dated August 7 1943. ► Today is a particularly appropriate day for writing you this letter, Mrs. Cobb, as it is one year ago today that Walter, with several of his shipmates, was blown over the side when a bomb exploded near the gun he was manning in a noble battle with the enemy; a battle which was to gain us a glorious victory in the capture of Guadalcanal Island in the Solomons. It is such courage as displayed by your son Walter, Mrs. Cobb, that will win complete victory for us, so you particularly, and all Americans in general, can be justly proud of him. It was while manning this gun on board the second vessel that Walter was blown overboard again when shell from an enemy warship exploded near him. Again there were several men blown overboard with him and it was from these men, who saw him in the water, that we have been given reason to believe that he was killed in action, Mrs. Cobb. A few of these men were alive when picked up and a few of the bodies were recovered for proper burial at sea, but Walter was not found among them. One of the men who survived reported that he recognized Walter in the water, just before he disappeared beneath the surface, and that he did not see him again.

Water B Cobb has a headstone as a place for a memorial to visit for time to come. Buried in the same cemetery are his parents. Walter was listed as Lost At Sea. He will never be forgotten for what he was willing to do for his Country.

One of the men in the water reported he saw Walter just before he disappeared beneath the surface. A few of the bodies were recovered for proper burial at sea. Walter was listed as "missing".
